The Gemini Screen Printing & Embroidery Volunteer of the Year award for 2008 is presented to a very deserving winner … Randy Allain.

Randy is a resident of St. Edward, in western PEI and is an avid runner himself, attending between half-a-dozen to a dozen races per year … making the extra long trek for races in and around the Summerside and Charlottetown areas.  Randy soon realized that he would see lots of runners on the roads up home, but rarely saw any of the runners making the trip to our RoadRunner races.

Randy figured he should do something about it by giving runners some other racing options in the “far West”.  He started by hosting the Bennie Bernard Memorial Run in Palmer Road, a new run to help raise money for his church.  This wasn’t enough, so he gave them another racing option, the Kent Building Supplies Run in Bloomfield, acting as race director for this run too.  In this case the funds went to another important cause to Randy … the fight against breast cancer … and in memory of his Mom.  Randy and his “yellow shirted brigade” are a visible presence and regular supporters of the Run for the Cure.

In 2008, organizers of the Alberton/Northport Aquatic Days wanted to add a run to their celebration … so guess who they called to organize the run … and of course, Randy agreed.

Randy obviously agrees with our Club’s stated goal of “increasing participation in running” and the “promotion of an active healthy life-style”, and he has put his beliefs into action in Western PEI. Randy encourages them to start young. His runs usually have a distance specifically to get the kids involved, and at many of the races he attends, Dylan, his son, is usually in tow and participates with his Dad.
