2019 PRESIDENTS REPORT
August 7, 2020

THE PEI ROADRUNNERS HAD A BUSY AND EVENTFUL 2019. WE HAD 243 MEMBERS, ROUGHLY 40 OF WHICH WERE ROOKIES. THERE WERE 60 PLUS EVENTS LISTED ON OUR WEBSITE INVOLVING OVER 100 RUNS.

AS ALWAYS, WE WISH TO THANK THE MANY VOLUNTEERS; ESPECIALLY THE RACE DIRECTORS FOR CONTRIBUTING THEIR TIME TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THE MANY EVENTS. ALSO, I WANT TO THANK SPORT PEI FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE, WHICH MAY BE OVERLOOKED AT TIMES, BUT IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED. A SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO VICTORIA, USUALLY THE FIRST POINT OF CONTACT AT SPORT PEI AND SOLVER TO MANY OF MY QUESTIONS.

PROUDE’S SHOES, ADL, SOURCE FOR SPORTS AND RUNNING ROOM ARE AMONG LOCAL BUSINESS WHO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE ONGOING SUPPORT TO ROADRUNNERS MEMBERS. WE THANK THEM ALONG WITH THE SPONSORS FOR THE ANNUAL AWARDS.

WE CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN AN ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP OF NEARLY 250 BUT WE DO SEE SIGNIFICANT TURNOVER IN OUR MEMBERS – COULD BE 75 PER YEAR 2019 SAW THE CONTINUATION AND GROWTH OF THE YOUTH RUNNING SERIES UNDER THE STRONG LEADERSHIP OF MAUREEN PETERS, JOCELYN PETERSON, HEATHER MACAULAY, KRISTY NEWSON AND TRACEY CAIRNS –BRIOUX.

OUR AWARDS WERE ANNOUNCED ONLINE THIS SPRING. WE CONGRATULATE ALL THE WINNERS AND PROMISE TO EVENTUALLY GET ALL AWARDS DISTRIBUTED.

THE CLUB WISHES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE YEARS OF SERVICE CONTRIBUTED BY PAM PAQUET AND STAN CHAISSON ON THE EXECUTIVE AS THEY MAKE WAY FOR NEW FACES.

WHILE 2019 WAS A SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR THE CLUB WE ARE NOT WITHOUT OUR CHALLENGES. THE NEW EXECUTIVE NEEDS TO DEAL WITH SEVERAL CONSTITUTIONAL MATTERS ( directors at large, when is the year?) . WITH SO MANY EVENTS NOT OCCURRING IN 2020 THE EXECUTIVE WILL LOOK INTO OUR DUES FOR 2021.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE BIGGEST NEWS OCCURRED THIS SPRING .FIRST WE WERE FORCED TO CANCEL OUR AWARDS BANQUET IN MARCH. WE AGAIN THANK EVERMOORE BREWING COMPANY FOR THEIR UNDERSTANDING. THEN, IN JUNE, OUR MALE ROADRUNNER OF THE YEAR WAS KILLED IN A HIGHWAY ACCIDENT WHILE RIDING HIS BICYCLE. THE INCREDIBLE SADNESS OF LOSING JACOB SIMMONS HAS BEEN MADE EVEN WORSE WITH THE VERY RECENT PASSING OF HIS FATHER.
PRIOR TO MR. SIMMONS DEATH THE SIMMONS FAMILY AGREED TO ALLOW THE PEI ROADRUNNERS TO NAME OUR ANNUAL BURSARIES IN JACOB’S MEMORY. IN ADDITION, THE CLUB HAS CONTRIBUTED $ 500.00 TO A SCHOLARSHIP SET UP IN JACOBS NAME . CONTRIBUTIONS CAN BE MADE TO THE
COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF PEI.

I THANK EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT THE PAST TWO YEARS AND TRUST THE CLUB, UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP, WILL CONTINUE ITS RICH TRADITION OF PROMOTING RUNNING ON PEI.

IN THE WORDS OF DR. MORRSION PLEASE CONTINUE TO BE SAFE,PATIENT & KIND.
