Good morning Road Runners,

It is no surprise that the Executive had to make the decision to cancel the PEI Road Runners Club Points Series for 2020 as well as all other awards the PEIRR Club gives out on an annual basis. As we have had only a limited number of sanctioned races this year it was felt we did not have sufficient events to award prizes and awards as done in the past.

For those who have paid their membership fees for 2020, your membership will automatically be transferred to 2021.

This past August, we elected new members to be part of the Executive. We welcomed the following members:

  • President: Michael Bergeron
  • Secretary: Derek Underhill
  • King County Rep: Lana Chaisson
  • Queen County: Jeremy Thompson
  • Prince County: Vacant

The following members are continuing:

  • Vice President: Ensor McNeill
  • Treasurer: Alan Easton
  • Youth Series Rep: Maureen Peters
  • Past President: Kevin McCarville.

I would like to offer many thanks on behalf of our membership to Janet Norman-Bain, Pam Paquet, Stacey Kuypers, Cheri Gallant and Stan Chaisson for many years of dedicated volunteering towards the success of the PEI Road Runners Club as part of the Executive.

Going forward, it is likely that the Christmas social and banquet will also be cancelled due to current health concerns. We intend on reaching out to the Race Directors to see what our 2021 PEI Road Runners Club Points Series could look like, but as you know we live in a pandemic where our plans have to evolve and adapt.

Community Cross Country Race

The Gray Group, Fox Meadow Golf Course and the UPEI Cross Country Team would like to invite you to come out and give a cross country race a try at beautiful Fox Meadow on Saturday, November 14th.

Enjoy running on the carpet-like fairways of the golf course while enjoying the views of the harbour and duking it out with your friends! Proceeds will go to the UPEI Cross Country team.

There will be 8km and 5km options on a looped course. Race times as follows: 5km female race 10am and male at 11am. 8Km female at noon and male at 1pm. If race numbers are far below 50, then races will be combined.

Final details will follow shortly, as some specifics are dependent on the number of registrants. All CPHO Covid -19 guidelines will be met. Cost is 20$, and registration will soon be available through Running Room. We will allow race day registration, but would prefer online if at all possible. For details, contact Mike Peterson at mapeterson44@gmail.com.

Because of the 50 person capacity, please RSVP if you plan to attend.

Annual Meeting

The PEI Roadrunner Constitution requires us to have an Annual Meeting and requires thirty(30) days notice. It is our intention to have the meeting on Friday, August 7th. Time and location TBD. We are having a bit of a challenge finding a suitable location – large enough to hold 50 people while ensuring physical distancing and not fitting our budget. A number of facilities are still closed

We anticipate it will be an abbreviated affair – Presidents and Treasurers reports and election of new Board Members being the primary items. Michael Bergeron has agreed to take on the president’s role, Derek Underhill the Secretary’s and Lana Chaisson the Kings County Rep.

Jacob Simmons

Your executive was shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic accident which claimed the life of Jacob, our 2019 Male Roadrunner of the Year, in early June. With the permission and support of Jacob’s parents the Executive has decided to honor Jacob by naming our annual Bursaries in his memory.

Evermoore Brewery

The Executive wishes to acknowledge and thank Evermoore for their understanding after we cancelled the Annual Meeting/Awards banquet in March will very little notice. We cancelled the March 13th event on either March 11th or 12th. . We are extremely grateful to Alex Clark and his staff for their generosity and understanding. We ask that you keep them in mind when you are in the Summerside area and are considering patronizing a local business. The Executive did approve a $ 500.00 payment to them in recognition of time and costs incurred in prepping for the event. Evermoore never requested any compensation for the cancelled event . Again, a big THANK YOU to Evermoore

Events

We have been asked a number of times whether their will be any more Roadrunner events this year. The short answer is ‘we don’t know’. The long answer is ‘we have not received any requests for events, all events must be signed off by the CPHO, we have a template for Race Directors to follow should they wish to submit a planned event to the CPHO and we are open to requests for sanctioned events’. We will not sanction an event unless we have confirmation from the CPHO that they have approved the operational plan for the proposed event.

The template is available on the website.

I have been the liaison with Sport PEI to date and am prepared to carry on this role for the foreseeable future.

Kevin McCarville,
President

Dear Roadrunners,

Our Executive hopes you and your family are successfully managing  these challenging times. Like you, we are monitoring the ever evolving situation with a view to the ‘new normal’, whenever and whatever that may be.

We have forwarded questions to the CPHO (through SportPEI) specific to our organization to determine how we may sanction events on a go forward basis. I want to be clear that we have no plans or tentative schedule, this is just an avenue to help us be ready when the time is right.

Apart from establishing a basis to hold events your Executive has a number of outstanding matters . In no particular order they include:

  • Holding the Annual Meeting and selection of new Executive. We have identified candidates for President, Secretary and Kings County Representative to replace retiring members
  • Our Constitution never contemplated anything like Covid 19. We may need to be creative in resolving issues around the annual meeting
  •  We have decided to list the 2019 Awards winners on our Facebook and web sites in the near future.
  • We have been advised there will be no relief on our insurance fees for 2020 whether we hold events or not
  • We are entertaining the idea that 2020 registrations will be good for 2021 if we cannot hold events this year
  • We are continuing to correspond with Evermoore Brewery re costs incurred for the Annual meeting/awards Banquet

We know many of you are continuing to run as we see you on the streets, trails, and boardwalks.  We encourage you to contact us with any questions or comments.

Stay positive and we will see you all eventually

Kevin McCarville

President
